The Stylish Guide to: Fashion Staples

If you’ve followed me for any length of time, you know I firmly believe that your budget shouldn’t limit your style. Even as a personal stylist, I buy most of my clothes from consignment pages or use discount codes when online boutiques run sales. Not over-investing in any one item gives me the freedom to explore different styles or silhouettes without blowing my budget.

That said, there are pieces worth the investment. Timeless wardrobe staples not only offer versatility but also stand the test of time. While they may cost more upfront, the cost per wear (aka girl math!) makes them worthwhile in the long run. These are the items you’ll reach for again and again, mixing and matching them effortlessly across seasons and trends.

Keep in mind, “financial investment” looks different for everyone, so I’ve included options at multiple price points for each piece.

The Blazer

This is hands-down my favorite staple. I truly believe every woman should own at least one blazer. They flatter all body types—whether you want to accentuate your waist or conceal areas like the upper arms. And no matter your personal style—classic or quirky—a blazer can be styled in endless ways.

Try this:

  • Fun & casual: Pair a blazer with a graphic tee, high-waisted jeans, and bold heels or sneakers.
  • Timeless & elegant: Go with a button-down shirt or cashmere sweater and pleated twill trousers for a work-to-dinner outfit.

Also, who says a blazer has to be black? Personally, I have five: black, plaid, pinstripe, neon pink, and chartreuse. Each one gets plenty of wear because blazers are truly timeless.

The Perfect Pair of Jeans

The “perfect” jeans will look different for everyone, depending on your body shape and style. When shopping, steer clear of anything too trendy (like rhinestones, embroidery, or bold colors), which can quickly date your look.

Instead, opt for a classic silhouette—like a straight-leg cut in a medium or dark wash. These can easily be dressed up with heels and a blazer or down with a tee and sneakers. Simplicity equals longevity.

The White Tee

Yes, a white tee can feel boring—and no, you don’t have to spend a fortune—but the right one can elevate your outfit. While you can absolutely rock a $20 pack of men’s Hanes tees, consider that cheaper cotton shirts may shrink or fade quickly, forcing frequent replacements.

Look for:

  • Fiber content: A small percentage of manmade fiber can actually extend the tee’s life.
  • Fit: Avoid super tight silhouettes unless you’re going for a bodysuit vibe. Oversized works, but not at the expense of shape.

A high-quality white tee pairs effortlessly with skirts, leggings, jeans, and yes—your blazer. Spending a bit more here can actually save you money over time.

A Sleek Button-Down

Hear me out—even if you’re a stay-at-home mom or have an eclectic style, a button-down shirt deserves a spot in your closet. I’m not talking about stiff, fitted versions with darts. I mean a relaxed, boyfriend-style button-down that’s endlessly versatile.

Try this:

  • Mom mode: Layer it over an athletic romper or dress for park hangs, then tie it around your waist when it gets warm.
  • Statement style: Pair with a floral skirt and throw a leopard print jacket over your shoulders for an eclectic, layered look.

And remember—it doesn’t have to be white or blue. Choose a color that works with your wardrobe. Neutrals are safe, but if neon pink is more you, rock it confidently.
